แต่ก่อนจะเปิดหนังดูก็ได้ลองไปย้อนดูเครดิตผลงานของผู้กำกับหญิงที่มารับหน้าที่ดูแลงานสร้างในภาคนี้ ก็ต้องบอกตรง ๆ ว่าแทบไม่มีความคาดหวังอะไร ท่ามกลางความเลือนลางในเนื้อหาของภาคแรกที่นึกเท่าไหร่ก็ยังนึกไม่ออกได้แจ่มแจ้งเสียที แล้วก็เป็นเช่นนั้นจริง ๆ เพราะผลลัพธ์ที่ออกมาใน The Old Guard 2 ค่อนข้างเจือจาง ไร้เสน่ห์ ไร้นิยาย และอาจจะไร้รสนิยมในความพยายามขยายจักรวาลที่ได้แค่มีเลข 2 ห้อยท้ายต่อ แต่ในแง่เนื้อหายังล้มเหลวอยู่

อาจจะบอกตรง ๆ ว่า The Old Guard 2 น่าจะเป็นความดันทุรังที่อยากจะทำออกมาเป็นหนังแอคชันไตรภาคออกมาให้ครบ ๆ ตามสูตร โดยที่ไม่ได้คำนึกว่าทรัพยากรและความหนักแน่นของพล็อตเรื่องจะทะเยอทะยานเพียงพอที่จะซื้อใจผู้ชมได้หรือไม่ และนี่ก็คือผลลัพธ์ที่น่าจะเป็นของหนัง ออกมาเป็นหนังแอคชันที่รสชาติจืดชืด พร้อมกับท่วงท่าที่แข็งทื่อ หามนต์เสน่ห์แบบที่ภาคแรกทำเอาไว้ไม่ค่อยเจอเลยสักซีนเดียว กลายเป็นว่าภาคสองเป็นการพัฒนาที่ถอยหลังลงคลองเข้าไปอีก

ปัญหาใหญ่ ๆ ก็คือพล็อตของหนังที่ ที่แปะหน้าตัวโต ๆ ว่าเป็นภาคต่อหนังแอคชัน แต่ทว่ามีความแอคชันอยุ่เพียงหย่อมสองหย่อมเท่านั้น หนังพยายามอย่างแรงกล้าที่จะพยายาม(ยัดเยียด)ใส่ฐานข้อมูลในการขยายรากฐานจักรวาลเพิ่มขึ้นไป แต่น่าผิดหวังที่ประเด็นต่าง ๆ ที่ใส่เข้ามานั้น ไร้ซึ้งน้ำหนัก และไม่สามารถจับต้นชนปลายอะไรได้เลย แม้กระทั่งความสัมพันธ์ภายในทีมนักรบอมตะที่เคยแนบแน่น แต่ภาคนี้กลายเป็นทีมที่เหมือนไม่ได้เป็นทีมอีกต่อ ทุกอย่างช่างแห้งแล้งเหลือเกิน

และหนังก็อาจจะสเกลใหญ่เกินไปที่ผู้กำกับหญิงคนใหม่จะแบกรับได้ไหว นั่นจึงสะท้อนออกมาสัมผัสได้แทบจะทุกซีนในหนังเรื่องนี้ ที่เต็มไปด้วยความเก้ง ๆ กัง ๆ เป็นการนำเสนอผ่านสูตรสำเร็จแบบฉาบฉวย ที่ก็ไม่น่าใจเหมือนกันว่าผู้สร้างหยั่งรู้และเข้าใจถึงคอนเซ็ปต์ของ The Old Guard ภาคนี้มากน้อยแค่ไหน ก็ลงมาเพียงลุยสร้างงานภาคปฏิบัติให้จบ ๆ ไปเท่านั้น เพราะองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ไม่ใช่ลักษณะของหนังที่ดีเลย

โดยเฉพาะไฮไลต์บรรดาฉากต่อสู้ที่ควรจะเด็ดดวงและเจ๋งอีกครั้ง แต่ The Old Guard 2 ไม่ต่างกับการดาวน์เกรดลงไปอย่างน่าพิศวง ซีนบู๊ไร้ความคมคาย แต่ใส่เข้ามาด้วยแพ็คเกจสำเร็จรูปของหนังแอคชันแบบพึงมีเอาไว้เฉย ๆ ซ้ำปริมาณยังน้อยนิดแบบไม่จุใจด้วยซ้ำ ยิ่งมาผนวกเข้ากับจังหวะการตัดต่อและใส่ซีจีแบบชวนขนลุก(ที่ไม่ใช่ทางที่ดี) ก็ยิ่งลดทอนคุณค่าของหนังภาคต่อเรื่องนี้ไปอย่างน่าเสียคอนเทนท์

แม้แต่ทีมนักแสดงที่ได้ตัวเป้ง ๆ มาจับใส่เอาไว้อยู่ในเรื่องนี้ ก็ยังไม่สามารถพาหนังไปรอดได้ “ชาร์ลีซ เธอรอน” กลับมารับบทเดิมของเธอ แต่ในภาคนี้เห็นได้ชัดเจนว่าไร้เสน่ห์ที่เปล่งปลั่งของนักรบสาวอมตะจากภาคก่อน อีกทั้งจังหวะการถ่ายทอดผ่านบทที่ไร้มิติของเธอก็ไม่มีความคมคายใด ๆ เลย เช่นเดียวกับ “อูมา เธอร์แมน” ที่เข้ามาเสริมในภาคนี้ เป็นตัวละครใหม่ที่สำคัญ แต่ได้รับการต้อนรับทีไร้ซึ่งความยิ่งใหญ่ใด ๆ ซ้ำยังไม่เป็นที่น่าจดจำได้เลยสักนิดเดียว

โชคดีที่หนังภาคนี้ใช้เวลาไปแค่ 100 นาทีนิด ๆ ไม่ยืดยาวเนิบช้าไปเป็นหนัง 2 ชั่วโมงแบบไม่จำเป็น เพราะเพียงเวลาเท่านี้ก็เกินจำเป็นไปแล้วจริง ๆ เพราะหนังยังค่อนข้างล้มเหลวในการต่อขยายจักรวาลด้วยเนื้อหาที่สะเปะสะปะรกรุงรังเต็มไปหมด กลายเป็นภาคต่อที่แทบไม่ได้ถูกอัปเกรดใด ๆ ขึ้นเลย ทุกอย่างนิ่งเรียบเกินไป ไร้จุดเด่น ไร้เสน่ห์ และอีกนิดเดียวก็ไร้อรรถรสความสนุกไปแล้วซ้ำ

ซึ่งถ้าว่าหนังภาคนี้มีหน้าที่ปูทางไปสู่ภาคที่ 3 ของเฟรนไชส์นี้ ก็คงจะต้องบอกว่า The Old Guard 2 กดข้ามไปเลยก็ได้ เพราะแทบจะไม่มีเนื้อหาที่เด่นชัดเพื่อนำทางไปสู่ภาคถัดไปสักเท่าไหร่ นับได้รวม ๆ สามารถทำออกมาเป็นหนังสั้นสัก 9-10 นาทีก็ได้กระมัง กลายออกมาเป็นหนังเรื่องยาวที่เต็มไปด้วยน้ำเน้น ๆ เนื้อไม่ใส่ ผลลัพธ์จึงออกมาทั้งน่าผิดหวังและน่าเสียดาย ดังนั้น The Old Guard 3 ต้องแก้สถานการณ์แบบด่วน ๆ (ถ้ายังมีต่อ)

I have to say honestly that I had almost no expectations, amidst the ambiguity of the content of the first part that no matter how much I thought about it, I still couldn’t recall it clearly. And it really was like that, because the result that came out in The Old Guard 2 was rather diluted, without charm, without fiction, and perhaps without taste in its attempt to expand the universe that only had the number 2 attached to it, but in terms of content, it still failed.

It may be said frankly that The Old Guard 2 is probably an attempt to make a complete action trilogy without considering whether the resources and the strength of the plot will be ambitious enough to win the hearts of the audience. And this is the likely result of the film: an action film with bland taste, with stiff moves that can’t find the charm that the first part had in a single scene. It turns out that the second part is an even more regressive development.

The biggest problem is the plot of the movie, which is advertised as an action sequel, but there are only a few small areas of action. The movie tries hard to (force) the information to expand the foundation of the universe, but it is disappointing that the issues that are put in are weightless and cannot be grasped at all, even the relationship within the immortal warrior team that used to be close, but in this movie, the team does not seem to be a team anymore. Everything is too dry.

And the film might be too big a scale for the new female director to handle. They just get down to creating the practical work to finish it because the various elements are not characteristics of a good film at all.

The fight scenes lack sharpness, but are included as a ready-made package of an action movie that should be there. Moreover, the amount is so little that it’s not satisfying. When combined with the timing of the editing and the inclusion of goosebumps-inducing CGI (which isn’t in a good way), it further reduces the value of this sequel, making it a waste of content.

Even the cast that has been put together in this movie can’t save the movie. Charlize Theron returns to her original role, but in this part, it’s clear that she lacks the radiant charm of the immortal warrior from the previous part. In addition, her timing in delivering the role without depth is not sharp at all. The same goes for Uma Thurman, who joins in this part as an important new character, but is welcomed without any greatness and is not even memorable at all.

Luckily, this movie only lasts a little over 100 minutes, not dragging on and becoming an unnecessary 2-hour movie. Because that amount of time is already more than necessary. The movie still fails to expand the universe with a messy and cluttered content. It becomes a sequel that has almost no upgrade at all. Everything is too flat, without any highlights, no charm, and just a little bit more and it will be tasteless and no fun at all.

If this movie is supposed to pave the way for a third installment in the franchise, then you can probably skip The Old Guard 2. It has almost no clear content to lead to the next installment. It could have been made into a 9-10 minute short film, but it ended up being a full-length movie with no substance. The result is disappointing and a pity. So The Old Guard 3 needs to fix the situation quickly (if there is a sequel).
